The first stop is a 45-minute break in Port Douglas, with welcome refreshments and a look at Four Mile Beach. Further north the day moves through the forest in short bursts: an hour for lunch, a guided rainforest walk, and time on the beaches around Cape Tribulation with hula hoops, frisbee and footy.

The standout for most guests is about 45 minutes at a private swimming hole in the Daintree, a freshwater creek with a jungle rope swing that the operator says only its groups use. There is also an hour on the Daintree River looking for crocodiles, snakes and birds, and on the way back the bus stops at Rex Lookout for sunset over the Coral Sea.

At $166 it is one of the lower-priced full days from Cairns on this site, and lunch is included. The trade-off is time on the bus, which several reviewers mention, and the fact that you skip Mossman Gorge. Croc sightings on the river vary with the weather and the season.

• Saltwater crocodiles live in the Daintree River and along this coast. Sightings from the cruise boat are common but never guaranteed, and you never swim in the river, estuaries or at croc-signed beaches.
• The rainforest is green all year. The dry season (roughly May to October) is the most comfortable; the wet season (about November to April) brings heavy downpours and high humidity, and marine stingers are around the beaches from roughly November to May.
