Small-Group Daintree Tours

A day in the Daintree from Cairns covers a lot of ground: Mossman Gorge, the Daintree River, the ferry, a boardwalk or two and Cape Tribulation Beach, with about three hours of road at each end. On the big coach tours you do all of that with a full bus. The tours on this page state a cap on the listing, somewhere between 10 and 16 guests, and they travel in vans.

The two Cairns vans

From Cairns, the choice comes down to two listings that describe almost the same day. The Premium Cape Tribulation and Daintree Tour (our breakdown) lists a cap of 14 guests from $199 per person, rated 4.7 by 663 guests. The Small-Group Cape Tribulation and Mossman Gorge Tour (our breakdown) caps at 16 from $191, rated 4.6 by 937.

Both travel in a Mercedes Sprinter with panoramic windows. Both stop at Flagstaff Hill in Port Douglas, spend about an hour and a half at Mossman Gorge with morning tea and an optional swim, sit down to a restaurant lunch with a tropical fruit tasting, take a one-hour Daintree River cruise, cross on the cable ferry and finish at Alexandra Lookout and Cape Tribulation Beach. Both offer a multilingual audio guide through a phone app. Ice cream at the Daintree Ice Cream Company is at your own expense on each.

So the difference on paper is two seats and $8. Among one-day tours from Cairns with more than 100 reviews, the premium tour holds the highest rating. One small caution: a note further down its listing repeats the 16-guest line from the other tour, so if 14 is the reason you are booking, confirm it with the operator.

Either way, expect a long day. The operators describe it as about 12 hours, with pickups from 7am in Cairns, 7:50am in Palm Cove and 8:35am in Port Douglas.

Smaller still, from Port Douglas

Port Douglas is about an hour closer to the forest, and the smallest groups start there. The Best of Daintree Day Tour (our breakdown) takes a maximum of 10 guests from $196, rated 4.8 by 58. It covers Mossman Gorge with damper for morning tea, a Daintree River cruise, a boardwalk, a cooked-to-order lunch at the Heritage Lodge with a swim in Cooper Creek, then Cape Tribulation and Alexandra Lookout. It isn’t suited to children under 10, and Cairns guests can drive up and meet the guide at the Wildlife Habitat car park.

The Daintree and Cape Tribulation Tour from Port Douglas (our breakdown) runs a 14-seat vehicle from $175, rated 4.8 by 447. Its crocodile cruise is on Cooper Creek, a mangrove-lined creek north of the ferry, and lunch is at the Heritage Lodge. The minimum age is seven. More on both at Daintree tours from Port Douglas.

What a smaller group changes

The road is the same length and the ferry is the same ferry, so a small group won’t shorten your day. What changes is everything in between. Getting a dozen people on and off a van is quicker than a coachload, which leaves more time at each stop. The guide can answer your questions on the boardwalk, and lunch is a sit-down restaurant meal on all four capped tours.
