Mossman Gorge Tours from Cairns

Mossman Gorge sits at the southern end of Daintree National Park, where the Mossman River runs clear and cold over granite boulders under the rainforest canopy. Cyclone Jasper closed it in December 2023, and it reopened in February 2024. On a day trip from Cairns it is usually the first big stop of the morning, before the tour carries on to the Daintree River and, on most itineraries, Cape Tribulation.

Getting in: the shuttle

You can’t drive a private car to the gorge. Visitors park at the Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre and ride a shuttle bus the rest of the way; it runs every 15 minutes from 8am to 5pm, with the last bus back at 4:30pm. The shuttle carries a fare, and the tours on this page cover entry as part of the day, so there is nothing to sort out on arrival. Kuku Yalanji Country

This is the Country of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people. On 29 September 2021, Daintree National Park was handed back to them, and it is now jointly managed with the Queensland Government. If culture is the reason you are going, two smaller operators go much further. Bama Bubu’s full cultural day is guided by Traditional Custodians and adds Cooya Beach and the stone fish traps at Rocky Point. The Aboriginal coastal adventure pairs a beach and mangrove walk with a Kubirri Warra clan member with lunch at the Cultural Centre. Both have only a handful of reviews so far.

Six tours from Cairns

Our top pick is the small-group Cape Tribulation and Mossman Gorge tour, from $191 with a cap of 16 guests. It spends about an hour and a half at the gorge, with scones for morning tea, a guided walk across the suspension bridge and a chance to swim, then carries on to lunch, a one-hour river cruise and Cape Tribulation Beach. The premium version runs the same shape with a cap of 14 from $199.

The Mossman Gorge day tour gives the gorge two hours before its river cruise and a lunch stop at Cape Tribulation. The Wildlife Habitat tour ($182, 4.9 from 18 guests) is the one that stays south of the ferry: wildlife park, gorge, café lunch and a river cruise, in an electric bus. The Down Under Tours day trip ($218) adds a two-course lunch and Cape Tribulation. The Cape Trib Connections tour (our breakdown) is the lowest-priced full day of the six at $140, and saves the gorge for the end of the afternoon.

About that swim

Several listings promise a dip, and the water is lovely to look at. The Cultural Centre’s own advice is more cautious. It recommends against swimming in the Mossman River because of strong currents and submerged objects, and people have died there. If you do go in, stick to the sheltered spot, in the dry season, where you are directed. Crocodiles are unlikely in water this cold and fast. The Cape Trib Connections guides supervise the swim and only allow it when conditions permit, which is the right spirit.
