Daintree Tours from Port Douglas

Port Douglas sits about an hour north of Cairns, and that hour matters on a Daintree day. The full-day tours from here run about nine hours door to door, against 11 to 13 from Cairns, and the groups are often smaller. Port Douglas also has something Cairns doesn’t: a half-day Daintree tour that gets you back to the pool by late afternoon.

Four full days

Our top pick is the Daintree, Mossman Gorge and Noah Valley tour (our breakdown) run by Tony’s Tropical Tours. From $186, it is rated 4.8 by 503 guests, the highest rating of any Daintree tour on the site with more than 100 reviews. The day starts with a guided walk at Mossman Gorge and a Daintree River cruise, crosses the ferry to Alexandra Lookout for morning tea, then carries on to Kulki Lookout at Cape Tribulation. The part the others don’t have is Noah Valley, a private World Heritage property where you swim in a clear rainforest stream while lunch is cooked: steak, fish or a vegetarian option. It needs a minimum of two guests to run, and children must be seven or older.

The Daintree and Cape Tribulation tour (our breakdown) is the one to book if Cape Tribulation is the goal. It runs a 14-seat vehicle from $175, rated 4.8 by 447, and combines Mossman Gorge, a beach walk at Cape Tribulation, a one-hour crocodile cruise on Cooper Creek, lunch at the Heritage Lodge and Alexandra Lookout.

For the smallest group, the Best of Daintree Day Tour (our breakdown) takes a maximum of 10 guests from $196 and is rated 4.8 by 58. It fits in damper and tea at Mossman Gorge, a Daintree River cruise, a boardwalk, a cooked-to-order lunch with a swim in Cooper Creek, and an hour around Cape Tribulation.

Two more full days sell from Port Douglas. The Cairns Adventure Group’s Port Douglas departure ($168, 4.6 from 166) follows the same plan as its Cairns day tour, with a Welcome to Country at Mossman Gorge. The Experience Daintree zipline day ($224, 5.0 from 55) swaps the gorge for two hours on a canopy zipline near Cape Tribulation.

Half a day

The afternoon Daintree tour (our breakdown) picks up at 12:50pm, takes a Daintree River cruise with a beer, wine or soft drink on board, then walks an easy 500 m boardwalk at Mossman Gorge with time for a swim if the river allows. You are back around 5:30pm, for $126, rated 4.5 by 109. The same operator runs a morning version at the same price. Neither crosses the ferry, so Cape Tribulation isn’t part of the plan.

Staying in Cairns?

You can still use these tours. The Best of Daintree and afternoon tours meet Cairns guests who drive up at the Wildlife Habitat car park. The Noah Valley tour doesn’t collect from Cairns, but the operator can offer a central meeting point in Port Douglas.
