Cape Tribulation Tours from Cairns

Cape Tribulation is the point where the Daintree Rainforest runs straight down onto the sand, and where two World Heritage areas meet: the Wet Tropics of Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef. It sits about 140 km north of Cairns, roughly two and a half to three hours by road, and about 35 km past the Daintree River ferry. The road is sealed all the way, so a day trip is easy to arrange. It is also a long day, and that shapes which tour suits you.

How much of the day you spend at the cape

Every Cairns tour that reaches Cape Tribulation spends a good part of the day on the road. The small-group operators describe a 12-hour day with about three hours each way; the Tropic Wings coach tour says closer to 13. Stops south of the ferry (Mossman Gorge, the river cruise, morning tea) fill most of the morning, and the beach itself often gets about half an hour.

That is the pattern on the Billy Tea Safaris 4WD tour, where Cape Tribulation is a 30-minute walk on the beach with an optional short boardwalk to the lookout, and on the two small-group tours. The Daintree and Mossman Gorge day tour spends its Cape Trib time over a 30-minute lunch. Eight tours, sorted by what they add

The classic is the 4WD tour from Billy Tea Safaris, rated 4.6 by 1,805 guests and priced from $168 per person. It includes a one-hour Daintree River cruise with tea and biscuits beforehand, a guided rainforest boardwalk, lunch with a freshwater swim, the beach, and a scoop at the Daintree Ice Cream Company, which is included. The listed itinerary turns around at Cape Tribulation and does not go up the Bloomfield Track.

The Mossman Gorge day tour costs the same, carries the most reviews of any Daintree day trip on the site (2,974), and adds a Welcome to Country and smoke ceremony at the gorge. Ice cream is at your own expense on this one.

At $140, the Cape Trib Connections tour is the lowest-priced full-day tour from Cairns on this site; it walks the Marrdja Boardwalk, climbs to the headland lookout and finishes with a swim at Mossman Gorge. Swimming, crocodiles and the seasons

Estuarine crocodiles live in the Daintree River and along this coast, so the swims on these tours happen in freshwater creeks and swimming holes the guides know. Don’t wade in at a croc-signed beach. Marine stingers are around from roughly November to May. The dry season, May to about October, is the most comfortable time to go; the forest is green all year.
