Daintree Rainforest Tours from Cairns

The Daintree is the oldest tropical rainforest on Earth, usually put at around 180 million years, and from Cairns it is a day trip. A long one. Cape Tribulation, where the forest runs down to the beach beside the Great Barrier Reef, is roughly 140 km north of the city, across a river that still has no bridge.

That distance is the key to choosing a tour. Every operator drives the same coast road and crosses on the same cable ferry, so the differences between them are in the details that fill the eleven or twelve hours: how many people are on the bus, which stops you get and for how long, what lunch is, and whether you reach Cape Tribulation at all.

What a Daintree day trip covers

Most tours from Cairns string together the same four places, in roughly this order.

Mossman Gorge is the southern entrance to Daintree National Park, a boulder-strewn river under dense forest, and the first stop on most itineraries. The land is Kuku Yalanji country, and in 2021 the Daintree National Park was handed back to the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people, who now manage it jointly with the Queensland Government. Several tours open the visit with a Welcome to Country and Smoke Ceremony. Private cars cannot drive to the gorge; visitors ride a shuttle from the cultural centre, which the tours handle for you.

The Daintree River is next. An hour on an open-sided cruise boat looking for estuarine crocodiles on the mud banks, plus kingfishers, tree snakes and whatever else the skipper spots in the mangroves. Then the cable ferry, and everything north of it is the Daintree coast proper: Alexandra Lookout, the boardwalks, the rainforest lunch, and finally Cape Tribulation beach.

The main choice: how big a group

Should you drive yourself?

You can. The road is sealed all the way to Cape Tribulation, the ferry runs from 5am to midnight, and a two-wheel-drive hire car is fine as far as the end of the bitumen. What you give up is the guide, which in a rainforest matters more than it sounds: most of what lives here is small, camouflaged or high in the canopy, and the difference between a walk and a good walk is someone pointing.

You also sign up for around five or six hours behind the wheel on a winding road, much of it with a ferry queue in the middle. The drivers who enjoy it most stay a night north of the river. Swimming, crocodiles and the weather

The Daintree is beautiful and not entirely tame. Estuarine crocodiles live in the river and along the coast, so the beaches and the river are for looking at, not swimming. The gorge water is clear, cold and fast: the Mossman Gorge centre advises against swimming in the river, people have died there, and you should follow your guide’s call on the day. Between about November and May, marine stingers are in the sea as well.

The rainforest is green in every month. May to September is the easiest time to visit, drier and far less humid, with cooler mornings. The wet season from November brings downpours, full waterfalls and thinner crowds; tours still run.
